My 7 tips for effortless holiday hosting

Hosting over the holidays can be stressful, but by preparing in advance and incorporating a few key tricks, you’ll pull it off (seemingly) effortlessly!

Set the table days in advance if possible. At the latest, set it the night before your event. It’s one less thing to think about and will help ensure your home looks pulled together when guests arrive. Check out my blog post on how to create a tablescape here. Also, pull out your serverware and label what dish goes with each with a post-it note.

Make ahead what you can. Things like mashed potatoes, casseroles, salad dressings and cocktail mixes are great to make a day (or more) in advance.

Pay attention to lighting. Dim overhead lights, turn on lamps and light all the candles. Diffused light from different areas of the room create a cozy atmosphere and flattering glow. I also turn on lamps in every room in case guests want to wander around.

First impressions are everything. Turn on outdoor lights and light lanterns by your front door. Welcome guests with greenery and a candle in your entryway. Clear the clutter so there’s a place for coats, shoes and bags.

Create zones throughout your home. I like to have a designated area where we gather for a welcome cocktail and appetizers. After finishing dinner, we move to the living room or the patio for coffee and dessert. More comfortable seating and small change of scenery re-energizes the party after a heavy meal.

Keep the bathroom fresh with a clean hand towel, scented candle and your favorite soap. Bonus points for a small bud vase with fresh flowers! For a big group, replace the towel partway through the evening. Nobody likes to dry their hands with an already damp towel.

After your guest leave, no matter how tired you are, fill and start the dishwasher, soak what needs to be soaked, take out the trash and recycling, and generally put the place back together. You’ll thank yourself the next morning.

Do you have any great tips for hosting? I would love to hear them in the comments!
